The Leadership Gap Matters
In the direct selling world, women power much of the workforce: an estimated 75% of distributors globally are female. And yet, for all that presence in sales, far fewer women lead at the very top. That disparity isn’t just a pipeline problem, it’s strategic issue. When women founders and CEOs thrive, they bring more than just a fresh face: they bring profound empathy, a commitment to developing others, and an instinct for building business with heart

Key Takeaways:
- Women make up a huge share of the field but remain underrepresented at the CEO level.
- Several female leaders in direct selling are being recognized globally for their influence.
- These leaders bring a blend of expertise, community focus, and heart to their companies.
- Their success underscores the future potential of women-led direct selling organizations.
Women Who Are Leading the Charge
Women aren’t just leading the way in the field. They’re also founders, visionaries, and hands-on leaders. A few names have stood out to me over the years:
- Joni Rogers-Kante: CEO & Chairwoman, SeneGence – A visionary founder whose belief in long-lasting beauty solutions sparked the creation of LipSense and grew SeneGence into a global cosmetics powerhouse.
- Kara Egan & Colette Gunnell: Founders, Scentsy – Entrepreneurial partners who transformed a simple flameless-wax concept into the thriving home fragrance brand Scentsy.
- Heidi & Orville Thompson: Executive Co-Chairs, Scentsy – A dynamic leadership duo guiding Scentsy with passion and purpose while supporting a vast global consultant community.
- Jennifer Orlando: CEO, Arbonne International – A forward-thinking executive driving Arbonne’s global growth through strategy, innovation, and consultant-focused leadership.
- Melanie Huscroft: Co-Founder & Chief Visionary Officer, Younique – A mission-driven leader dedicated to uplifting and empowering women through beauty, confidence, and entrepreneurship.
- Anna Malmhake: CEO & President, Oriflame A seasoned global executive leading Oriflame with deep expertise in brand strategy, transformation, and international growth.
- Isabella Weems: Founder, Origami Owl – A young entrepreneur who built Origami Owl into a major customizable jewelry brand through creativity, heart, and community.
- Loren Ridinger: Co-Founder & CEO, Market America | SHOP.COM – A powerhouse business leader who shaped a global e-commerce organization rooted in empowerment, innovation, and people-first success.
- Mary Young: CEO, Young Living Essential Oils – A hands-on, purpose-focused CEO carrying forward Young Living’s global wellness mission while leading its expanding community.
- Ann Dalton: Founder & CEO, Perfectly Posh – A bold founder who built a self-care-centered direct selling brand dedicated to confidence, community, and modern entrepreneurial opportunity.
These women (and many others) have built brands, inspired field teams, and proven that women-led companies can scale and sustain in this demanding industry.
Why Women’s Leadership Resonates Differently
What sets these women apart is how they lead:
- Resilience & Courage: Being a woman in leadership has never been easy. These CEOs have weathered criticism and business pivots, but they keep driving forward, building companies that last and impact their competition.
- Empathy Meets Execution: They combine big-picture vision with deep understanding of what their field actually experiences. That means building policies and products that reflect the real lives of their salesforce.
- Legacy Plus Innovation: Some CEOs come from established, legacy companies, while others founded newer brands. But all are innovating: whether it’s digital-first strategies, wellness-focused products, or more socially conscious business models.
- Mentorship as Mission: As a female executive myself, I’ve seen how powerful it is when leaders actively mentor distributors, especially women. These women don’t just run companies, they build communities and pipelines for the next generation.
As a female executive who’s worked deeply in the vendor-supplier side of direct selling, I’ve seen firsthand how women in leadership nurture stronger business models and more inspiring company cultures.
Women and the Future of Direct Selling
The successes of these women CEOs signal something bigger: a shift in the direct selling industry. The models they lead are more human, more flexible, and more aligned with the values that draw people into direct selling in the first place: connection, empowerment, and shared growth.
For companies like mine (Smart Office Solutions & Direct Selling Resources), this matters deeply. It means designing technology, training, and support systems that don’t just scale revenue, but also support leaders who lead with heart. It means building partner ecosystems where businesses are celebrate and amplify women’s voices.
My Personal Call to Action
To all the women in our industry and those who support them: keep growing, keep leading, and don’t lose sight of how powerful this work is. As an executive in the direct selling vendor space, I want to commit to two things:
- Design for Promotion: In our technology, our processes, and our strategies, we’ll build for a future where every leader, no matter their background, can build their leadership skills and potential.
- Amplify Field Voices: Through our platforms, our tools, and our conversations, let’s elevate the voices of women who have committed themselves to promoting direct selling products and services.
At the end of the day, direct selling has always been about people. And the women leading these companies show that we can build businesses that empower not just the field, but entire communities. Here’s to more exceptional women running the show. And here’s to supporting every step of that journey..
